Networking. Our central NAS is a quad-core Intel Atom, as mentioned in the white paper. Therefore, I believe this is the cause of the performance drop, along with the indexation requirements, but I cannot get Synology support to provide any help in what to do to improve this or to validate our architecture. Although Synology manages to handle bandwidth in a smart way, the volume is still being accessed continuously. Not being able to SCHEDULE synchronization is clearly THE big issue.īecause of that lack of functionality, synchronization is effectively done almost continuously. But I didn't find any command for this matter. There is NO WAY to adjust the sync schedule through the GUI, hence my question to do it through shell. Except our users are directly connected to the NAS via SMB (their home folder is network based) instead of using Cloud Station Drive (useless in our environment) Yes, we are using multi-site coordination, exactly as described in the white paper. I wasn't aware such a guide would exist, and Synology support didn't give out that information. We've been in touch with Synology support for 2 weeks now, but they're not helping. Our central NAS is a RS-815+ with a SSD cache, we use RAID5ĭS-916+ on remote sites, all software is up-to-date Obviously, users started to complain about slow performance. Changes are then replicated to the 4 other NAS automatically.īUT, as soon as we implemented Cloud Station, SMB performance (from the users to the 'homedir' share) DROPPED from 100 MB/s to 40-50 MB/s on the central NAS (remote NAS are OK). NOTE: users are obviously connected to ONE NAS at a time, therefore writing changes to only that NAS. This way, the data and changes get replicated everywhere. To achieve this behavior, we configured Cloud Station Server (on the central NAS) and Cloud Station ShareSync (on the 4 remote NAS), with a 2-way sync. Then, as part of our users are moving between sites, we need to synchronize the whole 'homedir' folder between our 5 NAS, so whenever the user moves to another location (s)he will find their environment and data promptly. On the NAS we use a share called 'homedir' containing subdirectories for every user (with appropriate rights of course) ![]() ![]() ![]() We are using 5 Synology NAS (headquarter and 4 remote sites) to store the 'home directory' of our (150) users on the network.

![]() Once you understand where to point the tip of the sundial (North or South?), the rest of the project seems accessible, as Julldozer of Mojoptix has done most of the hard work already for the rest of us. We are used to hearing that “3D printing is the only way,” and this is another one of those projects. It’s an incredible example of some unthinkably modern ways to retain technologies of the past. This makes sense since the design using sunlight cast through holes to show legible numbers is quite an elaborate undertaking. All you’ll need are four 3D printed parts (ABS, he notes), as well as a jam jar and a few screws, nuts, and washers.Īs Julldozer describes, 3D printing proves to be essential in the project because the elaborate algorhythmically designed holes - the “swiss cheese”– can’t be made any other way like injection molding or another mass production method. The whole project is open source, and you can download everything on Thingiverse (or just buy it from his Etsy shop). Then he combined these number matrixes into an open-source 3D printable model with OpenSCAD script and STL files. He created a matrix for each number shown on the sundial. In a YouTube video (see below) that explains how Julldozer conceptualized and designed the project, he tells us he built the sundial algorhythmically using OpenSCAD. And I thought I had heard it all. It’s kind of like, why stop at approximating the correct time with a sundial when you can straight out just have the exact digital time displayed? Modern enough for you yet? Julldozer of Mojoptix set out to 3D print a sundial with the question: “What if we had a sundial that worked more like some sort of enormous digital watch?” And what he means by this is that as the style on the sundial moves, sun is either blocked or it breaks through the design holes (he calls it “swiss cheese”) so that the actual time can be read in the shadow of the sundial. Now, add 3D printing to make a digital sundial for the Southern hemisphere and that might get your attention, right? For the Southern hemisphere, the latitude has to be reversed from the Northern hemisphere’s latitude. Using just a few parts, the trick is to get the edge (style) of the part that throws the shadow (gnomon) to be parallel to the Earth’s rotation axis while staying accurate all year long. Sundials are rather simple instruments at first glance. It was Ancient Egyptian and Babylonian astronomy that gave us the first sundials, and since then they have been used as serious objects of mathematical study and as decorative objects because they represent technology of the past that was streamlined over time. Do you remember the first time you grasped the concept of a sundial, the idea that we can tell general time from observing the shadow cast by the sun via an object designed for this purpose? It seemed like a pretty magical concept, and it also introduces basic concepts about math and astronomy in an interesting and beneficial way. ![]() In 2006, Apple released the Boot Camp Assistant, a multi-boot utility that enables users to install Microsoft Windows operating systems on Intel-based Mac computers. In addition to requiring more space, modern ship defense systems are very expensive. Without more space to carry a lot more ammunition Navy surface ships in combat against adversaries such as China, that are armed with large numbers of UAVs and anti-ship missiles may “not be able to adequately defend themselves”. Limited depth of magazine refers to the fact that Navy surface ships can use surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) and Close-in Weapon System (CIWS) Gatling guns to shoot down only a certain number of enemy UAVs and anti-ship missiles before running out of SAMs and CIWS ammunition - a situation (which naval officers call “going Winchester”) that can require a ship to withdraw from battle, spend time travelling to a safe reloading location (which can be hundreds of miles away) to rendezvous with a Military Sealift Command ammunition ship. Traslated this means that fighting swarm drone attacks would require lots more ammunition which requires lots more money and space aboard ship. Early versions also were criticized as too lightly armed and armored to survive combat.By John Konrad (gCaptain) In a new study titled Navy Lasers, Railgun, and Gun-Launched Guided Projectiles the US Congress reports the two most important limitations that Navy surface ships currently face defending themselves against UAVs and anti-ship missiles are limited depth of magazine and unfavorable cost exchange ratios. But those mission modules were beset by problems, and the anti-submarine capability was canceled in the new budget.Īnd what about that speed? The fastest ship can’t outrun missiles, and firing up those marine turbines for an extra burst of speed turned the ships into gas guzzlers, analysts said. ![]() The ships were supposed to be made versatile through plug-and-play mission modules for surface combat, mine-sweeping operations or anti-submarine warfare. The ships topped 50 mph (80 kph) - fast enough to chase down pirates - and utilized steerable waterjets instead of conventional propellers. ![]() The Navy envisioned fast, highly maneuverable warships capable of operating in near-shore, littoral waters when it announced the program a few months after Sept. However, the littoral combat ships that are targeted are young. Those cuts surpass the proposed nine ships to be built. “We need a ready, capable, lethal force more than we need a bigger force that’s less ready, less lethal, and less capable,” he said Monday at the Navy League's Sea-Air-Space symposium in Maryland.Īll told, the Navy wants to scrap 24 ships, including five cruisers and a pair of Los Angeles-class submarines, as part of its cost-cutting needed to maintain the existing fleet and build modern warships. Mike Gilday, chief of naval operations, defended the proposal that emphasizes long-range weapons and modern warships, while shedding other ships ill equipped to face current threats. But it would also reduce the size of the fleet that’s already surpassed by China in sheer numbers, something that could cause members of Congress to balk.Īdm. The Navy contends in its budget proposal that the move would free up $50 million per ship annually for other priorities. ![]() Navy wants to decommission nine ships in the Freedom-class of littoral combat ships - warships that cost about $4.5 billion altogether to build. PORTLAND, Maine - The Navy that once wanted smaller, speedy warships to chase down pirates has made a speedy pivot to Russia and China - and many of those recently built ships could be retired. In Pavia (circa 1490), Leonardo met Marcantonio Della Torre, Professor of Theoretical Medicine, who asked for collaboration for a textbook on anatomy. A student could not assist in more than 2 dissections during the medical course. The public teaching of anatomy was regulated by very narrow rules. The anatomic theories were the ones supported by Galen, in which the blood forms in the liver and then goes to the periphery where it is consumed by the tissues and that the venous blood goes from the right to the left ventricle through microscopic pores. In the early Renaissance (1319), Mondino de Liuzzi published the textbook Anhotomia, which represented the only textbook of anatomy accepted in all medical faculties in Europe for almost 200 years. To all those facts, we should add the Bulla “Ecclesia Abhorret a Sanguine” (1163) and the Papal Bulla “De Sepolturis” (1299) in which it was practically forbidden to touch bodies after death. Being an artist, he had a special permission to perform human dissections.ĭuring the Middle Ages, human dissections were rarely performed for many reasons, including religion and fear of transmission of diseases.
